Identified Needs of the Migrant Community

Our work with our families has identified a wide range of needs that transcend educational needs.
  • Education: Parents and students require support in accessing available education resources and also require support in successful achievement of these programs. Migrant students have consistently performed below their non-migrant peers in nearly every measure of academic achievement.
  • Health: Medical, Dental, and Mental Health needs are prominent among our migrant students and their families.
  • Basic Needs: Many of our families require help with obtaining food, clothing and other basic needs. These resources are available in the community, however, families are not always able or willing to access them.
  • Cultural Proficiency: A small but growing number of our families from Oaxaca are unable to communicate with resource agencies and service providers because the agencies do not speak their language (mostly Mixteco Bajo).
  • Legal Resources: Many of our families require help in accessing and navigating the legal landscape in the United States. This is especially common for families for are attempting to obtain their legal status.
  • Housing: disproportional (to salaries) cost of housing continues to force families into housing options that are unsafe, dense, and overpriced. Our Families often double up or find refuge in vehicles, shelters, or short term
